Volunteer in Langtang & Area

Info about the Langtang area

The Langtang region is best known for the Himal Mountain Views, and is a popular trekking destination. This is approximately 150 km, and a 10 hour bus journey from Kathmandu. The Langtang region includes the Chinese / Tibet border, and is one of the most remote areas in Nepal. Volunteers here will have very limited access to telephone, mail and internet access.

People in this region are primarily Tamang. They are known for their industrious nature, and most work as porters for tourists visiting the area. However, because of the political instability and the remoteness of this region, few porters are employed because of the lack of tourism. As a result, this area has many of the poorest people in Nepal.

Volunteers working in this region should bring appropriate clothing for this environment. It is warm during the days, but gets extremely cold outside of daylight hours. Volunteers are also advised to bring sunscreen lotion, lots of insect repellent and appropriate inoculations and vaccinations for Malaria, Meningitis, Typhus fever, Hepatitis A & B, a warm sleeping bag, iodine or water purification tablets and appropriate clothing to be working in this environment.

Programs in Langtang:

Thulo Bharkhu Children Resource Center - In 2005 August we set up new library in Rasuwa, Thulo Bharkhu. This center has one classroom for 20 children. We have placed over 7 volunteers, and have trained more than 100 children at this location. Volunteers also teach English at a local school, a 10 minute walk from the center.

Goljung Children's Library, Langtang - Established in 2005. This library has 2 rooms, a library and office for the volunteer.  We have placed 6 volunteers, and have educated more than 150 children at this location. Volunteers also teach English at a local school.

Syabrubesi Children's Library, Rasuwa, Syabrubesi -  established in 2006. This library is at the corner of the town, it has two rooms, a library and office for the volunteer. We have placed 3 volunteers, and have educated 75 children at this location. Volunteers also teach English at a local school.

Gatlang Resource Center, Gatlang - We started sending volunteers to this resource center in 2006.  Originally it was located in a separate building, but later it was moved into the school so that the children could have better access to the resources.  Approximately 30 students attend the resource center before or after school, and the volunteer can also teach at the adjoining school during the day.

Our volunteer experience with INFO Nepal was one of the most rewarding and challenging periods of our lives.  We spent only a few short weeks at the Sacred Home Orphanage in Jorpati, but the kids made it feel like it was just a few days.  From the moment we arrived in Nepal, the INFO family made us feel comfortable and secure in a new country.  The thoughtfulness and experience of the INFO team allowed us to mesh well with the children and environment of the orphanage.

It is going to be so difficult to say goodbye to all of the wonderful people we have met in Nepal. Even though we have only been here a short time, the relationships we have formed have changed us forever and will always have a special place in our hearts. We shall never ever forget our humbling Nepali experience or the faces of those lovely children we had the opportunity to work with.

The first day of teaching was such fun; on the way to the library and back you are greeted by all the children shouting “morning Miss” and they were so welcoming. In the library we played many games with the children, sang and danced a lot and even turned the library into a little disco once or twice. All though the Children enjoy having fun, they are also very keen to learn.

The time I spent in Dhulikhel was memorable by the kindness of all the people that lived in the village.  I was welcomed with open arms and made part of the village community as soon as I arrived.  The children in the village were adorable.
